Responsible pet ownership

A pet has been peoples friend for their life and also, brought untold joy and reward to people’s family, providing companionship, affection and health benefits, as well as teaching children responsibility and compassion.

However, according to RSPCA, “ in the last year, around 135,000 sick, injured, lost, neglected, or abandoned animals passed through RSPCA shelters across Australia.”

So, RSPCA suggest that if people want to adopt and have a pet, they need to be willing and able to take the significant responsibility before bringing pet as a new family member. In other words, a pet requires an enormous responsibility which should not be taken lightly.

RSPCA listed several questions that potential pet owners need to consider before they buy and bring a new pet. The questions include:

• Why do you want a pet? – for companionship, protection or exercise?
• How much time are you able to commit to caring for your pet?
• Are your prepared for the effects on your home? - from ‘accidents’ on the floor to pet hair on your clothes and furniture?
• What if your circumstances or lifestyle change?
- for example, if you travel, move house, change job or want to start a family.
• Can you afford all the ongoing expenses associated with owning a pet? (including food and supplies, obedience training, veterinary bills etc.)

Animals are one of the most valuable friends and people canot live happily without pets, animals. Therefore, we should consider and take care about animals and their issues on the abandonment.
